Takoma Park Magnet and language elective

Anonymous
If you child is at TPMS Magnet program, did they take a language? if so, which language and in what grade did they first take it?

How's Spanish 1/2, is it manageable? How did they do?

Thanks!

Almost every magnet kid takes a language. Yes, totally do-able. Everyone I knew (like my kid) took the regular Spanish 1

Not every 6th grader takes a language, but if they do, they never elect to take the slower-paced class. 6th grade not bad at all in terms of work load to language is very manageable.

Current magnet 7th grader. We know kids who took French and kids who took/take Spanish. Both have been happy. School will tell magnet families to take 1A/1B as the child can always move backwards.

We found that our non-language and heavily math/science geared DS did fine academically in that class (mostly As). HOWEVER, when it came to 7th grade and Spanish 2, he was overwhelmed and couldn't understand anything the teacher was saying. He definitely memorized for the test and then quickly forgot what he learned.

We had no problem moving him back to Spanish 1B this year. Class is easy -- he never has to work. There are other magnet kids in there with him. The most important thing to me is that this year he's definitely getting a much better grasp of the basics and the language. Do not listen to PP who said that the magnet kids never elect to take the slower paced class.

My older child (in Magnet) took French in 6th grade. It was not easy.
Now for my younger child, I am considering to wait until 7th grade.

I wish there would be French 1a and French 1b at Takoma. But Takoma has only one French teacher, and my kid refuses to study Spanish

Rising 6 th grade parents - we also would prefer French 1A. Has the school assessed recently to see where parent/student interest is?

I do not think school cares. School has only one French teacher and bunch of Spanish teachers. Not even all students who want to study French can get it. Somehow it is assumed that everyone would love Spanish...

Really? That's disappointing! Our rising TPMS magnet 6th grader wants to take French--anyone know how many don't get in? If that happens, are her only options either Spanish or wait until 7th?

Exactly options would be either Spanish or wait until 7th grade. (Believe me wait until 7th grade is not that bad of an option. Then in 7th grade your child gets priority for language.)
