-Very good SAT scores
-Decent number of APs -Good grades (not sure yet but probably top 15 or 20% at a good charter school) -Bad on the extracurricular front. In Model UN and good at it, very committed, but that took up a whole lot of DC's time and ended up being only "real" extracurricular besides a couple of clubs. No sports or music. -One summer abroad do-gooding -Very strong writing skills-can wow with an essay. -White rich kid like the rest of 'em. Advice? |
What do they want? Big school or small? Urban or rural? What major? |
What is very good SATs? 2100 or 2350? |
Any size, urban or at least near a big city. Probably PolSci but unsure. |
Figure out first choice and apply early decision. |
Does your school use Naviance? If so, check out where other kids from the school with your child's stats have been admitted.
Start touring colleges - that will give your child a better idea of what he/she likes in a school. The extracurriculars don't sound bad, but your child still has time to work on that. Start volunteering and/or get a job. On the Common App there's only room for 10 activities/clubs and it's actually not that hard to fill it up. |
I would visit Tufts. Not exactly urban, but a stone's throw/metro stops from Boston. There is a five year program with the Fletcher School. I agree with PP, add more extracurriculars. |
Do you want merit aid or are you fine with full pay? |
And yes, we need to know the SAT scores and the unweighted GPA. What AP classes and what scores on the exams? Details matter. |
I disagree with advice about extracurriculars. A school would rather see deep commitment to one activity than a scattershot approach. |
