comprehensive cognitive testing -- where?

My child is 6 and has had a long history of difficulty remembering any symbolic associations -- numbers, colors, letters, facts, friends names, you name it. He's smart, and seems to understand the concepts, but struggles to remember the labels and therefore struggles getting his point across. He's frustrated, and this has started to translate in big meltdowns lately -- a few times every single day. we would like to better understand his particular mix of strengths and weaknesses, so that we can better guide him.

We're in NOVA, but for a good, personalized evaluation, we're ready to go wherever we need to go. If GMU can do the trick, we'll be happy to stay in our area, but if Children's is a better place we'll go there. We have had a poor experience with his older sister (ADHD) at a local private clinic, and we really would like to find a better place for him (as well as for a re-check of his sister). Where do people go for a quality assessment -- not only of the weaknesses, but also of the strengths that a child may have? Do we have a "gold standard" in the area?

Our DC just had a neuropsych evaluation at Children's in DC. Comprehensive and the neuropsychologist was great -- able to connect the dots, so to speak.

My DS had a neuro-psych evaluation at Stixrud and it was excellent. He's got ADHD and communication disorder that significantly impacts his expressive/reception speech. It can be very difficult to tease how much/where the impact is from ADHD or his communication disorder. We were really impressed with Stixrud. They were highly recommended by our education consultant and dev ped. as well.
