I am just wondering what is realistic if DS is recruited to play A Division 1 Sport. We won't qualify for financial aid an have limited available income since we support a family member with special needs. The numbers look good in paper only. Is there usually a significant scholarship which comes with Div 1 offer? |
Depends on how good your DS is, how much they want him, what school, and what funds are available. |
what sport? what position? |
DS is a defense lacrosse player. His Club and HS coach believe he will be a Div 1 recruit. Unfortunately he has not had interest from University of MD so that we could pay in-state tuition. |
NP: I am also interested for my DD who is a swimmer. She does not have the times for serious college interest but I am curious. |
You can usually find the number of total scholarships available for each team. Those are then divided up among the recruits. in state at UMD without a scholarship may be cheaper so don't rule that out. |
Lacrosse is a sport where most scholarships are split. You get a fraction of the total cost, even at D1. If money is an object you may look further down the food chain to a D2 or D3 school if the player has good grades and scores. May work out to be less costly. |
College Confidential has an athletic recruit board that might be helpful to you. My DS was a swimmer at a top LAC which was D3. No $$ because it was a need based school, but a "tip" from a coach can help with admission. Head over to College Confidential. People are very helpful. |
