how cold is San Diego in January? Better off going to Palm Desert?

the water will be cold, but will the beach be playable in January?

how much warmer does it get if you drive inland a bit, to the wild animal park or some other places similarly inland?

alternative, any ideas on Palm Desert for kids?

Yes, you can play on the beach anytime of year. I wouldn't expect it to be much warmer inland. Maybe even cooler. Check the temps online. If choosing between sd and Palm desert def do sd - so much better
