I have a very long hair, straight for a years now. I'm looking for something new. I have hight forehead so I just don't look good in bangs. What can I do. I'm a mom of 8 months old so I need something I can do fast. I don't want to cut a lot of my hair maybe just a bit. Help please. Advice very much appreciated. |
How old are you? |
30 yo.Thanks |
Layers...not "mom" layers, but hip layers that keep your length. Go to Bang (every time I see someone with terrific long layered hair, they tell me that's where they went). If you're into color, maybe some color or highlights or lowlights can make you feel and look fabulous without even changing your style.
-so says another long-hair. |
How long? Without a pic it's hard to say, and it sounds like you don't really want to cut it. But what you might think is cutting a lot off won't even be noticeable to others if your hair is really long. Once it's past the shoulders it all really looks the same.
Personally, I think a lot of women hang on to their long hair for the wrong reasons (always had it, took so long to grow it out, etc.) and a lot of time it just isn't very flattering--it drags down your facial features. You see all these women on What Not to Wear and other makeover shows freak out about cutting their hair and then they look a million times better after Nick or whoever cuts off a LOT of it. Maybe TiVo a few episodes of that and just skip to the end to see the hair. I once met Crystal Gayle, and her long long hair was NASTY!!!! |
I'm the poster who asked how old you are. ITA with this poster. Once you're an adult, I think you need to let go of the hair past your shoulders and often shoulder-length is too long. |
I'm mostly just playing devil's advocate here, because I agree with PP to a point, but I'll also note that chopping hair shorter to make it look more "done" is a DC thing to some extent. Long layered hair, often put up or even in ponytails, is a lot more common on grown women in the posh parts of LA and London, the two other cities I've lived in recently. It's partly the difference between a softer, more natural look that responds to fashion and a more severe determination to look serious no matter what, I think. |
I actually dislike really short hair on most women--most women don't have the face to pull that off (I include myself in the group that couldn't pull it off, BTW). I think shoulder-length hair is generally uniformly flattering, no matter the age. I also think longer hair is far more feminine, and although they may not admit it, I think most men think that as well and prefer long hair on women.

Hehe. I'm 17:22, and when I moved to DC, I had a buzz cut. I took one look around and decided I wasn't going to let anyone here cut my hair. No offense. This was in 2000. |
...only in D.C. If you go to nyc or la there are plenty of women w/ nicely kept shoulder-length or longer hair. D.C 'norm' is incredibly uptight when it comes to hair--don't even get me started on fashion sense. fwiw, i second bang hair salon--i've only been to u street, but hear that the 15th street location is good, too. |
Don't agree at all. Long hair is gorgeous. It makes you look at least 10 years younger.... |
I'm 33 and have had long hair most of my life. I've had it layered, oval cut, straight cut, bangs, no bangs. You can try parting it different ways...side, middle, zig zag. Or you can cut the front to a length that can sweep to the side—very chic!
I used to spend a long time washing/drying/straightening it every morning. But these days I wash it at night, scrunch it as soon as I get out of the shower and pull it up into a loose scrunched ponytail so that it will dry overnight extra wavy. I l spray wave enhancing spritz on it in the morning and it's done—no blow-dry, no iron, no fuss. |
Interesting. I just read an article in some women's magazine - Elle I think - and it said that one of the reasons that women look so much better and younger these days is because they no longer cut their hair short when they turn 35.
I agree with that. The most beautiful and elegant older women I know nearly all have long straight hair. |
^^ What she said! I always think of Christie Brinkley when I think of aging gracefully and beautifully. That woman is STILL gorgeous and has long flowing blonde hair at what, almost 60 now? You would never know it to look at her. She is my bellwether. I'll take note of what age she finally cuts her hair and then cut mine when I get to the same age! No sense getting the no nonsense "Mom-sense" hair cut prematurely! Mine is cut "short" right now, which is just touching my shoulders. It had been to my shoulder blades. I keep it long layers with long light bangs and medium blond, but it was getting too lifeless. I like it now with the shorter length and layers but I won't cut it again for 3 months either... |
18:45 again-- At 30, OP has a few years yet before her hair loses its texture and starts to challenge an aging face. I think much below the shoulders can look a little provincial, but I agree the key is layering for a more updated long cut.
I don't go to Bang, but I know a lot of people who do- it's a popular place. Is DC convenient for you, OP? You might want to ask for stylist recommendations in your area. |
