1) How many are required?
2) Can you retake them if you do poorly? 3) Do you have to report them all to colleges or can you pick and choose which ones to report -- I'll send History but not Chem, etc. 4) When did your child start taking them? |
|
They are only required at a few schools. Usually 2, Georgetown wants 3. Some programs, like engineering, may require Math 2. Best to look at the requirements for the school your DC is interested in.
My DC took 3 but did retake 2 of them. Score choice is allowed unless the school asks for all testing (a few did this). First one at end of AP US History in 10th grade. June test date. Other 2 at the end of 11th grade, May or June test date. |

Was the Sat 2 for US History different than AP exam?
Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom!! |
Yes, the SAT subject test for US history is based on a high school level course. The AP test is based on a college level course. The AP includes writing and subject test is only multiple choice. |
| Did they take the SAT2 for AP US history even if they took the AP test for that subject? |
|
Four SAT 2 exams. Chemistry and Math 2 after 10th grade, Spanish and US History after 11th grade.
Eight AP exams by the end of 11th grade. |
| My child took 3. Retook two of them. Georgetown requires 3 and other top tier schools require 2. Some schools accept the ACT in lieu of the subject tests. Most schools do not even require subject tests but make them optional. |
Yes. Schools that ask for SAT2s for admissions don't accept APs as an alternative. And the tests were quite different. My DC got a 5 on the AP, but didn't study for the SAT2 the first time and didn't do that well. |

My DS took zero SAT subject tests and was admitted to large state universities in MD, SC, and VA, including Va Tech.
|
| If you homeschool, you often need more SAT Subject Tests. |
Which asked for all testing? |
| My daughter took 3 and submitted 2 to the schools requiring them (which is the case for many of the selective private schools). If my memory serves me right, Georgetown was the one exception in that they required 3. My understanding is that the schools simply asked for 2 (or in one case 3) of her choosing, without any reference to wanting to see all taken. |
Not PP, but Stanford and Yale are among schools that want all test scores. |
