My DS has applied regular decision to this school. He wants to go into Engineering or CS and is very enthusiastic about this school. Of course, we would rather he go to a VA school (instate). He indicates that this is a top school and highly ranked for these areas. Please tell me what you know. |
I haven't been a student there, but lived in ATL. It is immediately downtown ATL, which does have a high crime rate. The people I know that have gone there, loved the school, though. |
For those who don't want to be in Virginia, and would prefer an urban environment. I would prefer it.
If you, as a parent, were willing to pay for out-of-state, I'd say it's worth it. We sent our 2 to out-of-state publics and have never regretted it. But if it is a serious financial sacrifice to pay for GT over VT, don't. |
Great school with a great reputation. My BIL went there, loved it, and is highly successful. |
I am living in Atlanta now, so I have some insights. It's a top school for engineering and tough for sure. Some kids take 5 years to finish the degree due to the intensity of the program. I know a polymer enginewere that landed a salary of about 50-60k a couple of years back. So it seems to be a decent school full of smart kids. However, there's a lot of crime due to location and naive college kids are targets of crime nonetheless. |
It's kind of large and impersonal. I wouldn't say it's worth the OOS costs over VT (or UMD if you lived in Maryland). There just isn't that much of a difference in quality between the schools to justify the much higher price tag. |
Have you toured Va Tech? Our DS loved it and hopes to go there. I had never been but was quite impressed and at $10K for tuition you can't go wrong. It is, however, difficult to get into the engineering program. You have to apply to one of (I think) eight or nine colleges in your initial application. Engineering, architecture are the hardest to get into. |
Very urban, higher rate of crime/property crime. When my husband briefly worked there, he could not leave his office unlocked to even go to the bathroom around the corner due to stealing.
Very competitive in Georgia and lots of kids love it. You have to be very smart and not need a lot of help. |
There is a stark difference in the caliber of students at VT and GT. GT is a top tier school and VT is not. |
Clearly not worth the OOS cost. Go to VT. |
I disagree. I've know top notch people who came out of both schools. His career is what he makes of it and has little to do with the name of the school. Save your money and stay in-state. |
Op, people who love VT love VT. We get it. As far as Engineering goes, GT is in a whole other league. Right now it is ranked just below Stanford and MIT. |
