Can you take Algebra II directly after Algebra I and do Geometry after both?

The usual sequence seems to be Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II - is it required that the courses be taken in this order? It seems to make more sense to take the Algebras back-to-back so the material isn't forgotten. Do colleges care in what order the student takes them? TIA.

I think there are systems which do use that sequence. I've wondered about that, too. I remember that I had no problem with Algebra I in eighth grade, but Geometry was a little struggle for me. Algebra II was not.

You need to look at the program of studies. In FCPS, for example, there are topics covered in Geometry that are pre-reqs for topics covered in Algebra 2.

In my school system, the sequence was Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry.

High schools differ; you need to read the course book for sequencing. Colleges don't care if Geom is taken before or after Alg 2. Really?

It really depends on your school system. Some topics in the geometry/algebra II/ trig/ precalc sequence are covered in different places depending on the curriculum of the school. If your school system assumes the students have already taken geometry, it seems fool-hardy to have your student be out of step. There will almost certainly be material that she'll need in that particular school's version of algebra 2 that was taught in that school's version of geometry.

Academically, it's fine. Whether your particular school allows it is another matter.

A third option, would be to take Geometry as your elective course the year that you're also taking Algebra II - that is, if math is an easy subject for you and wouldn't cause undue stress. This allows you to take pre-Calc in sophomore year and then both years of AP Calc by graduation.

I did this and then really struggled with precalc. I think maybe it's more useful to have Algebra II right before precalc than to have Algebra I right before Algebra II.

You want your Algebra II to back up to Precalc. Most of the Algebra I concepts will be reinforced in Algebra II, so the gap works out. You really don't want to skip a year between Algebra II and Precalc.

Algebra II is with trig - so that is why you have Geometry before Algebra II.

It depends on the school. My DDs sequence is Alg I , Geo, Alg II. When I was in HS, we were able to take Alg I and Geo freshman year (if approved by Dept). That allowed some students to get in Calculus Senior Year.

I did Algebra II and Geometry concurrently. I don't recommend this--I turned every Geometry problem into a huge equation when I really just needed to add 2+3 and get 5.

Our sequence (public school in another part of the country years ago) was Algebra 1 in 8th, Algebra 2 in 9th, Geometry in 10th, Trigonometry in 11th, and Calculus in 12th.

I don't think colleges care about the order.
