My parents' 12 year old dog had to be put down today. Not totally unexpected, but hard nonetheless. They got 2 dogs as puppies, one died 2 years ago and this was the remaining one.
We all go through pet loss, but my mom doesn't work so she was with him 24/7 and these 2 dogs were such amazing dogs. It will really hit both of them hard. We live about 45 minutes away. I offered to come hang out tomorrow, but she said my dad is taking the day off work so they will just do stuff together. Maybe the following day when he goes back to work? I don't want to get them any things (like a painting or memorabilia) as they are trying to declutter. I thought about sending a cheery bouquet. Or could meet them out for dinner tomorrow night. Any other ideas of a nice gesture to show my sympathy? |
| Donation in the dogs' honor to the Humane Society or similar? |
| When my parents lost their two dogs (at different times), we got them a small tree for the yard and the kids decorated a stepping stone that they have tucked in the mulch in the flower beds |
| Great ideas, thanks. |
| That is so nice of you. Make a donation to their favorite shelter or rescue group in their name. |
| Offer to pay for the dog's funeral expenses. |

Avoid the flowers... they'll die eventually just like the dog.
When my pet died, I thought it would have been a nice gesture to memorialize the pet in some way. Maybe a nice framed photograph or donation in her name to the shelter where I adopted her from. |

| My parents buried the ashes and planted a bush over the ashes. Maybe a nice bush or tree would be a good memorial. |
Perfect idea.
