I was wondering since the economy is in the toilet, if less people are applying to private schools, making some chances better of getting in.. |
probably. |
Nope. Applications are up at most private schools yet again. Too many people in Washington have too much money for this recession to matter when it comes to education since for most private school parents a top notch education is considered a necessity not a luxury. |
If so many kids are getting "top notch" educations, why is the Beltway so provincial? |
And the source of your data, please? |
I really think that a lot of people are reconsidering the private school thing. The reality is that public schools are doing a good job, and the private schools are having trouble proving that their product is better. |
I'm curious about why the Beltway is "so provincial"
DC is not NYC or London or LA. So yes, its not a metropolis of over 3 million, or 1 million for that matter. But provincial is really a state of mind....From someone who grew up in a town of 1,000 people, DC is NOT provincial in any true sense. |
Every once in a while, someone has to get on here and bash DC. Not sure why they'd bother to live here if they don't like it, but it takes all kinds. |
Well, a year ago, my DH and I were not EVEN considering DCPS, and now we are taking a VERY long hard look at it. We will probably not go, but it is on the list. I think that is a position a lot of families are in! |
The ADs at Beauvoir, GDS, St Patricks, Maret, etc... |
Can you really accept what they say at face value? I don't know why any AD would advertise the fact that their applications are down. |
Ah. Really, what do you expect them to say? ![]() |
Regardless of whether or not you've actually been told this by those four ADs or whether or not just because you've been told this it is actually factually true... If you think that it is in any way representative of the realities of the applicant pools at dozens of private schools across the Washington Metro area, you must be deluded. |
According to a recent Wall Street Journal article "Private Schools Feel the Pinch Amid Recession" private school enrollment is down across the board. Even if a few schools claim to be exceptions to the rule (they could also claim to have a population of Martians, that doesn't mean it's true) by and large, private school enrollment is going down. Ergo, if you are among those applicants not concerned about the tuition bill, your odds of getting accepted have improved.
Congratulations! Good to know that as long as we're declaring war on Wall Street and prolonging the Recession, at least it is good for someone! ![]() |
There was an article in today's NYTimes about this. [cavet- it was in the style section so I am not sure if this actually counts as news]
Most data right now in ancedotal. But the service that many schools work with that allows parents to pay tuition monthly has seen a 7% drop out rate this year, double that of last year. |
