| My partner and I have decided to make some changes to our family dynamics (amicable split). One or both of us will be moving out of the city. We've been at our HRLICS (highly regarded language immersion charter school for a year and want DS to continue. We're not interested in residency cheating. Even if we were the school is highly regarded and the parents are known for reporting cheats with no qualms. So, does anyone have actual information on keeping a slot and paying tuition? How much would that be? How do you set up an account to pay? Before I open up my mouth, I want to hear from someone who has done this. I'm also interested in how the child is treated. My child is pre-k at an age when a lottery slot would be available to a DC resident but for my kid (should he become an ex-resident). Should we expect any blow-back from families or hatred? Thanks for helping us plan for our future. |

It sounds like the school does allow kids to enter at K, correct? If so, I think they would only be able to allow you to continue for the rest of this academic year while you pay tuition, assuming that you and your partner are both not DC residents for the 2015-2016 school year. After that, they would have to offer up the slot to a DC resident in the lottery. You're only allowed to stay in a school and pay tuition if there isn't a DC resident who can get the slot. So, for example, if you were in PK4 at LAMB, I think you could stay while paying tuition because they don't allow kids to enter at K. But if you are in PK4 at Yu Ying, which does allow kids to enter at K, then you're out of luck.
Any chance that either you or your partner can remain in DC? |

The PP is right. You are only permitted to pay tuition if there are no more DC residents who want slots. At a HRCS, there will always be DC residents who want the slot. I would imagine that the principal could allow you to stay through the year, but to be frank, you probably don't need to reveal that you've moved for the rest of this school year because they're unlikely to admit anyone new and funding has already been distributed.
Sorry, but that's just how it is. |
| NP here in a similar situation. We're at LAMB. I have one kid in an older grade so I don't think they'd care about him. But, my younger child is pre-k 3. Would they allow you to keep the younger child because you have a sibling there or would they likely force the younger one out for a dc resident? |
LAMB is pretty well known for having MD residents at it's school. I don't think you'll have a problem. |
| There's definitively set up process for tuition payments, if you are allowed to stay. I have friends from VA and MD who have kids in certain DCPS schools, like Duke Ellington, where it is permitted. |
| you are gonna get flamed |
| Are both of you moving out of DC? If one of you is staying and has even partial custody, your child continues to be a DC resident. |
Yeah, but now the school is full of gentrifiers and they're cracking down on cheats. I wouldn't want that problem. Would this be a question to pose to the principal or to the charter board? Who's in charge and what are the lawful rules? |
Ellington is different because it's admission by audition. They can say "we have space for X kids but X-10 passed our audition so we'll take 10 kids from outside DC." Charters can't do that. You can only pay nonresident tuition if they've gone through their whole waitlist of DC residents. If you care so much about the school, I'd suggest one of you keeps living in DC. Alternately, many districts around DC have immersion--there was just this week a Post article about the French and Spanish programs in PG county, for example. |
I doubt the board is better than DCPS on residency cheaters. One Charter school principal had their daughter attending and they lived in PG County. |
I'm answering her Q as to how one pays for tuition if she's allowed to stay, not whether she will be allowed to stay. Please read before getting all incensed. |
I don't think they are "cracking down" as I know a MD admitted this year. |
To LAMB? Does his/her classmates know? How is she/he treated at play dates etc... And how have they not been turned in if not paying tuition? Also, would would decide if younger pre-k kid can stay and pay in the situation where there's an older sib? |
I can't speak to who knows what or how people are treated at playdates. I also don't know why they have not been turned in. I assume that just like everything else in DC - apathy. |
