Private Schools in LA

Anonymous
Moving to LA. Will be living in Palisades. Need to find schools for rising 4th, 6th, and 9th grader. (At least these are good entry years!) Looking for schools similar to Maret, GDS, NCS, etc. Know a little about Brentwood, but welcome feedback. Many thanks!

Harvard-Westlake and Crossroads are the two that everyone raved about when I lived there. Crossroads is the hippie-arty school full of movie stars' kids; H-W is really academically rigorous.

Marlborough if you're looking for an all-girls high school.

Wildwood, Willows (but only goes to 8th), Crossroads

LA privates are a whole different animal because of the large percentage of celebrities that send their kids to private. I know quite a few people (lawyers, doctors) who sent their kids to parochial school to avoid the celebrity driven culture at some of the independent schools. There are some single sex catholic schools in Beverly Hills that are very popular.

Honestly, find the school with the highest vaccination rates, so you know the other parents aren't idiots:

John Thomas Dye is a possibility for the youngest. From the Palisades, Brentwood will be the easiest commute for your family, followed by Crossroads.

Harvard-Westlake and Polytechnic School (Pasadena) are by far the two most rigorous, academic Los Angeles private schools. However, HW will be a noticeable commute in LA traffic (as will the all-girls Marlborough), and Poly is not even a feasible commute from the Palisades.

My advice to you is to choose Brentwood, and make your life easier for the family.

You will LOVE LA, but only after about a year. Enjoy your new life.

Loyola (all boys) is also a very good school, especially for a strong athlete, but again, it would be a difficult commute from the Palisades.

Moved from the Palisades to NoVa last year, so I don't know about the schools you mention, however; St. Matthews is in the Palisades and competes with John Thomas Dye (JTD) and Carlthorp in Santa Monica. All are drivable from PP. I'd check those three for K-5, and St. Matt's goes to 8.

The K-8 Catholic school in the center of the Palisades, Corpus Christi, is very good--the No. 1 Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which extends from San Diego to Santa Barbara (in sum: HUGE). That school doesn't look fancy, so many people interested in sparkle pass it over.

Huh. Three kids like that--if you choose Brentwood you could do all three in one spot. Sunset gets a little traffic-y but it's doable.

You will find families with that DC-LA connection at the school already mentioned as a good choice for your location.

You had to move from the Palisades to Northern Virginia? I am so sorry to hear that.

My sister's kids go to Harvard Westlake. It a great school. It goes 7-12 and has like 1,600 students. They have two campuses. She had to drive both kids to school each day to different campuses and that is a pain in the ass in LA.
