Hello,
I am looking for recommendations for high quality but reasonably priced vendors/stores which sell custom draperies for two story family room windows. (I would prefer a local business but would consider online vendors...The length is 18' from floor to ceiling and there are 3 sides of the room to cover - 2 side walls and a main fireplace wall). We have put it off for 14 years due to expense, but are hoping that having some window covering will help moderate the temperature in the room. I've looked on Pinterest and Houzz for vendors but have not had much luck. I am in NOVA. Thanks in advance. |
You will have to have them made. |

They should be easy enough to make: did you want them lined? Just straight lengths of material, seam lining and fabric at the selvedge---probably 120" wide a panel? That's 2 60" wide pieces and should be easy to handle? Make the lining about 3-4" narrower than the main fabric, and hem it a few inches shorter.and I'd hem both pieces before you see thm together. Turn right side out, press, and make a casing in the top. Super simple, and even easier if you don't plan on lining them. |

Another recommendation for them. |
JC Penney offers custom drapes, and will come to your home to make recommendations.

Do you really need the drapes to go all the way to the ceiling in your 2 story space? How do you plan to close them? Can you hang them over the first level of doors/ windows - it's a much more modern updated look. |
We have the same type of family room and just hung curtains on the main level windows. I would love the dramatic look of the super long ones but it would be expensive to buy or a pain in the ass to Diy - imagine installing curtain rods up there. |
drapes are gross get shutters |
You don't buy them. You have them made. It is tacky to have curtains covering o not half the window. |
Is your matresss on cinder blocks? |
I have a similar room and I was thinking of getting thermal shades that go from bottom to top and only th lower window. I would not see the drapes too much unless they were up to control heat loss. That might look better than drapes that long, and be cheaper. Hate to cover up the windows and view i love |
Thanks, all, for the replies.
I meant to specify I was looking for businesses that specialize in fabrication and installation of custom drapes. I did not imply they were going to be "off the shelf" and install them myself. (We did that with the ceiling fan in the room since my husband didn't want to pay a contractor and a builder pre-wire was already there. We won't do that again.) My husband and I are at odds on just addressing the lower level of windows only (he says yes - I say no) since I think it looks a bit unfinished/unpolished to do just one level though it would be cheaper, address the climate problem easily, and overall it is quicker to do it in the long run. We get a lot of sunglare from the upper level of windows which bleaches the sofa and loveseat fabrics so that is why I wanted to do something on both upper and lower level windows. I have not seen window shutters in a 2 story family room, but that may be something else to consider. |
