Last night my daughter refused to eat dinner (fish, brocolli, potatoes) because it was "gross". I tried to get her to eat a few bites and when I put a bite of fish in her mouth, she threw up. I've never known anyone with a gag reflex so strong that they threw up just from the taste of something in their mouth. Is that normal?! |
I forced my school-aged relative to try a vegetable they claimed not to like but had never tasted, and they gagged really seriously. I felt terrible. I can easily imagine it having gone one step further. |
Clarification -- I didn't use physical force, I said they had to at least try a bite. |
I have a very strong memory of doing just that when I was about 7 - in a restaurant. My mom was forcing me to eat something that I found disgusting. I would recommend letting her feed herself. That doesn't mean a separate meal, but unless you're worried that she's starving herself, I would let her decide what to put on the fork.

Sounds like mine to a T! |
This happened to me when my dad forced me to eat fettucine alfredo. Don't know why I hated it so, something about the stinky, melted cheese. I had to swallow my vomit so I didn't get in trouble. Awful.
I never, never force my kids to eat anything. I do encourage them to try everything, which they usually do, and they are free to spit it out if they don't like it.... |
oh yes, they can gag themselves easy. It is part being dramatic, part hating the texture and look of the food. |
I'm 31 years old and to this day I will gag and throw up if I bite into any sort of bone, grizzle, fat, chewy piece of meat. I blame it on my German grandparents and the nasty food they would cook and make me "try". No one ever forced me but I HAD to try a bite. I rarely eat meat out and barely eat the meat I cook for my own family.
Your daughter may have a serious gag reflex or just got grossed out. |
Lamb always made me projectile vomit. The body knows. |
MY mom forced me to eat lamb.I threw up. I don't know if it was the way she prepared it or what but I still vomit if I even smell it. |
OP here again. Wow, I had no idea! I don't force my kids to eat things, but I do insist that they try them. Maybe not so much anymore ![]() |
It happened to me when I was 10. My grandfather was visiting, and he gave me some plain Yogurt (I still can’t stand Yogurt). I tried hard to please him, but just couldn’t take it, and vomited.

Uh...what is the difference? |
OP needing to justify myself, I suppose. I "force" them to try a bite, vs. making them "clean" their plates. Clear? |
I did that as a child when my mother tried to make me eat fried oysters.
I don't force foods at all at meal time, for a variety of reasons, but that's one of them. |
