More affordable option or substitute for builtin bookcases

Anonymous
We have a large landing in our upstairs that would look nice with built-in bookcases, but I think actual built-ins would be too expensive. Any good less expensive options? I'm thinking open shelves on top and some sort of cabinet below. There are three walls that we would need them.

Thanks!

I have seen (on Pinterest) that people use regular bookshelves and add crown molding to make it appear more built in.

Can you make something work with Ikea Billy or Besta bookcases with doors on the bottom?

Tons of ideas on Pinterest. Google Centsational Girl - she's done this with billys and also a billy/besta combo. She's amazing!

You might be able to find a reasonable handyman who is good with carpentry.

+1. Another search term to try: "IKEA bookshelf hack"

I did this with ikea bookshelves and then had someone finish the drywall around it. Looks totally custom. Isn't.
