Went to FL and got attacked by noseeum bugs--any advice for next trip?

Anonymous
We've been going to FL for years, but somehow this was my first experience getting tons of bites from noseeums (sand flies). They are much more itchy and painful than mosquito bites, and have been lasting for days. Does anyone have any tips of preventing these kinds of bites? I had regular bug spray on and it didn't make a difference. Thanks so much.

My parents had that problem this year too. I actually found that a sunscreen we used had more affect than bug spray. It was probably banana boat baby, as I recall.

All types of bugs/flies hate lavender oil. I put a glob of coconut oil on the palm of my hand and then add two drops of lavender oil. Mix it all together and rub on my body.

Got attacked in Jamaica by them. Cortisone cream.

Dh swore b12 vitamin repeals them. Me, not so convinced. They sucked and put a damper on things.

Bug repellents do not work; long pants and sleeve help. They are seasonal in the US. If there is no wind out, they will eat you up. Smoke or a cigarette can keep them away, but usually there are so many of them that nothing really works.

I always find that they itch for about 15-20 minutes, after which the bits and itching go away. Did they get into your hair?

Didn't get in my hair. Bites on arms and legs. Severe itching and painful, much more so than mosquito bites. Thanks everyone for some great suggestions.

I've been stung at a beach in Sarasota and did not have an idea what bug was. I was standing taking pictures when suddenly my right arm started to itch and lasted for several days.
Thanks to you I now know what bug stung me. Sorry I don't have any tip for you.
