Breast Cancer Oncologist Recommendations

Anonymous
I am relocating to the area and my mom is coming with me. She recently learned that her breast cancer has metastasized to her lungs. I am looking for breast cancer oncologist recommendations in the DC/NOVA area. I want the best. We are coming from one of the best cancer centers and she needs excellent treatment. Thanks.

Dr Akbari at Virginia Hospital Center. My doctor, and definitely top notch.

I second Dr. Akbari and the entire team - top notch! I got several opinions from some of the other breast centers in the DC area and this one is amazing. You won't be sorry!!!

I would look at Hopkins....I go there (from NOVA) for my Kidney Cancer Specialist.

Hopkins brought Sibley so you could look there too. I also recommend Rizzo in Maryland

Dr. Akbari saved my mom's life when she had a very invasive form of breast cancer. I also see her annually because I must be monitored carefully due to family history. I love her! Dr. Fred Smith in Maryland is also excellent (he consulted on my mom's case and is wonderful!).

Do not go to Fred Smith.

If she is at one of the major cancer centers now you should speak with her oncologists there and ask for a recommendation. I would also go with Hopkins if you don't have another name. She could receive her transfusions here but be monitored by someone there.

Hopkins is the best, especially for stage 4 cancer. They helped my MIL live almost 15 years after breast cancer had spread to her bones.

Thank you!

Dr Akbari is not an oncologist. She is a breast surgeon. Highly recommend dr mary wilkinson. She is routinely voted as a top doctor in Washingtonian mag. I know several others who see her but not sure if she is considered "the best." Lots of good docs in this area.

I see dr. Favret. She is not a warm person, but the radiologist who recommended her said great things about her.

If you really like her current doctor, ask him for someone around here. Good doctors always have a network.

I posted above about being a patient of dr wilkinson's. Dr favret was my original doctor. I went elsewhere after she told me she didn't do scans to monitor for recurrence. I know this is standard practice and I agree with it but then she added "because it doesnt really matter in terms of overall survival if metastases are caught early or late." I just thought, f*** you, it matters to me. So glad I left her. Dr wilkinson is in the building next door in fairfax if you want an exceptional and warm hearted doctor.

Correct, Dr. Akbari is a great surgeon but she's thec quarterback of a breast cancer patient' steam and works hand in hand w/ an Oncologist.

I would not go to Dr. Mary Wilkinson. She did not listen to me and was really cold. I think her lack of attention led to my depression during cancer.
