Baking with silicone ware - safe?

Anonymous
I was given a bunch of silicone bakeware, jello molds- what was the verdict on these? Safe to bake and out hot liquids in them?

I don't know about their safety, but I feel that it alters the flavor slightly. However, I am a freak who doesn't like to drink out of plastic cups, as it makes water taste plasticy.

I've read that it's impossible to really know what additives are in it, so it's not as safe as using glass or a non-reactive metal. The colored silicone is particularly iffy.

I'm sticking to stainless steel, tin, glass, etc.

It's better than plastic though, right?

I don't use silicone bakeware. Years ago I bought a silpat baking sheet for making cookies. The smell/off gassing was so strong I couldn't stand it. Used it twice then donated. It can't be good to be breathing cooked plastic.
