Grad school application help

Anonymous
I applied to a program and didn't get in - that was a year ago, and I'm reapplying to the same school. Can I use the same essay, with only a few small tweaks about my grades and experience since last year? Should I point out in the essay that I applied before (they will obviously be able to know that I applied and used the same essay, so maybe it's best if I just cut to the chase?)

I wouldn't. It didn't work the first time, right? And if they have it on record (I assume they would) it will seem like you weren't willing to put any more effort into getting in. Write a new essay.

I would start from scratch and specifically address what has changed between last year and this year.

I doubt they have it on record. But if you have the same reader(s), they might remember your essay. Also, as a PP said, the essay didn't work last time.

That clearly doesn't seem like a good strategy.... If you can't convince them you are a better and more serious candidate than you were a year ago, they won't be inclined to let you in. And I bet they know you applied before...
