Is UCLA racist?

Recently, graduate students staged a sit-in over racism detailed in a report on UCLA. Their allegation is that this university has an unsafe climate for students of color. Most of the students at the sit-in were in UCLA's Graduate School of Information Studies and Education, and they represented all the students of color at the school. Thoughts on this from other parents of future college students?

first thought? What was she wearing?

sounds horrible, I know
But I can't imagine anyone asking that question of a person dressed business attire - or even "casual dressy."

She said she remembers a time when she was walking down a hallway at UCLA and someone asked her to change the toilet paper rolls in the bathroom, assuming that she was part of the maintenance staff on campus. She added that she thinks the person assumed she was not a faculty member because she is black.

That school is a haven for affirmative actions and supplies all the bad school administrators for the state

I have a great idea. Lets just label everything, every company, every race, every school system....RACIST. That way we cover all our bases and we don't have to keep asking this same question. spare us all, please.

there is no Affirmative Action when it comes to acceptance of students.

I assume the same would hold for hiring administrators?

If that's racist, what about Obama pal and aide Valerie Jarrett who infamously asked a (white) two-star general (in formal dress uniform) to get her a drink, thinking he was a waiter.?! I'd call that the clueless request of a prima donna (and the only White House aide with her own Secret Service detail). While I might accuse Jarrett of not understanding the military, I wouldn't call her a racist because of it.

I bet you have been carrying that story around for months. Whew, you got to use it.

And so you don't think a highly educated black person with 100s of first hand experiences with racism would know the difference between a mistake and a slight? Do you really believe she could have made it this far by recklessly crying wolf at every turn? The ridiculous reference to VJ is equivalent to "she must have been asking for it" when talking about discussing sexually inappropriate advances. Ignorant!

Obama should have fired Jarrett years ago. "Highly educated" or not, the only dispute among present and former White House staff is whether she's malevolent or simply a ditz.

Isn't that double standard though?

Have you ever visited California? Or Los Angeles? Or the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)?

If you have then you would find the premise that any if the UCs, UCLA included, is racist - laughable at best and race-baiting at worst.

It is hands down one of the most liberal, open-minded, forward-thinking, live-and-let-live, accepting, progressive, diverse Universities; in one of the most liberal, open-minded, forward-thinking, live-and-let-live, accepting, progressive, diverse Cities; in arguably the most liberal, open-minded, forward-thinking, live-and-let-live, accepting, progressive, diverse State that has ever existed in the history of this world.

That said, the past decades' out-migration of African Americans - a historically important, culturally rich, and significant community in California - from the State of California to other States and regions of this country, is a loss to California, and the question of why this is happening should be examined.

I hear what you're sayin and mostly agree but the fact is that only 4% of the student body is African American.
