Runner in front of front door

Does anyone have a runner starting immediately at their entrance instead of a doormat or small rug at their front door? We have a door that opens into our living room and our coat closet is about 8 feet into the house. I'd love to have a runner that runs the length of the wall from the front door to the coat closet, but don't know if that would look weird? We have furniture that delineates between the rest of the living room and the entranceway, so you wouldn't be able to see the runner from the living area. What do you think?

I've seen this in many houses...makes sense.

We have both. A small mat/rug in front of the door makes sense b/c it really does take the brunt of what comes in from the outside. It's easier to replace this as needed than the whole runner.
