Why is MCPS open this week and Fairfax is closed?

Anonymous
I don't understand why we have to have such an ass backward system. Fairfax was off Monday and Tuesday. They exist in the same snow band as MCPS so it can't be snow days. What's different?

My kids' classes are half empty, no work is being done, and it makes no sense. A full two weeks would have made more sense to allow families to travel over the break.

Because MCPS and FCPS are two different school systems.

My children reported few absences yesterday, and the usual amount of work (plus make-up work from all of the absences last week, when a lot of children in their classes were sick).

Yes, FCPS is better run than MCPS. LOL!

Your kids aren't very observant. Absences this week are sky high.

Doesn't MCPS have more Jewish holidays off?

Because we hired a superintendent that "gets it." Changing the calendar--ending early closing Mondays which was a nightmare for elem parents and adjusting the winter break to be 2 solid weeks--was a big agenda item for her.

I thought MCPS got rid of all religious holidays?

+1 to this.

What classes are half empty? Everyone was there in my kids' classes yesterday. And, they did what they normally do on a Monday.

If you need to take the day off, do like the OP of the other thread and just keep your kid home.

If you're such a good fortuneteller that you're able to find out how many children were absent in the classes of the children of an anonymous poster on the Internet, then don't you have more lucrative things to do with your time than post on DCUM?

No. MCPS took the names of the religious holidays off the school calendar, for next year.

Because all school systems are different? I have friends in Anne Arundel Co and they have a much different calendar than MCPS.

APS was also in session it appears.

Different school systems do different things as long as they all reach the required number of days in session. When does MCPS start compared to the Ffx day after Labor Day start? MoCo is giving the Jewish high holidays off, even if it isn't referencing them that way.

It all evens out, PP.

Parent volunteers work in the office at our school and help with attendance. 10-15 kids absent per class on average in our MCPS school.

Because kids have to LEARN OP!!!

Yet the scores are higher in Fairfax. Go figure.
