I LOVE them. Used to be embarrased to go in them. Then went to buy DC's clothes. Now I go in for myself all the time! Today I got some dishes for my sister for Christmas, a sweater for my mom, some jeans for myself since i've gained so much weight and like paying $6 for them. Tried on some True Religions for $30 but they were too big. I had to stop myself from buying a lamp, coffee table and other awesome stuff. I love the rush of a good deal. Goodwill, Value Village, Ultimate Thrift - love them all!!!!
HELP ME! I am supposed to be on a budget!! |

You need to revisit the finance educational materials that are taught to first graders regarding 'wants' v 'needs'.
If you are on a strict savings budget, you should only purchase needs. I've recently discovered eBay. I get a double thrill from the bidding and getting a deal. It takes a lot of self restraint, but I am trying hard to follow my advice above. |
| I don't mind buying second-hand things for myself but I would never give them as gifts. I think we've all known someone who gives out tattered thrift-store gifts for every occasion. Don't be that person. |
| Yeah, I'm a Value Village addict for the kids and my pants, but those aren't gifts. Rethink that one. |
| Oh Lord, my IL's friend sends us all kinds of worn out used up dirty stuff that she finds at yard sales. Then she gets mad when we don't go crazy with gratefulness. Some of it I actually put directly into the trash can. |
| You give out thrift store stuff as gifts? Thats pathetic. Just give nothing. |
| I think it's awesome to give second hand as gifts if you think the person will love it and isn't uptight. This is the ultimate recycling. I love thrift shops too. And consignment. They are everywhere now. |
| I was like you few months ago, but I got over it luckily as I was running out of space in my house. |
| I got a job so I wasn't able to go to Value Village on Mondays and Thursdays (25%off days!). I was going at least once a week, and I LOVED it. I miss going. It's amazing what kinds of good stuff there is! |
| Watch out for the bed bugs! |
|
I love thrift stores too but hardly ever have time to go (thankfully) because it is easy to buy stuff you don't even need because its a good deal. Maybe cut back so you only go once a month? Or only if you are looking for something specific?

Always always remember: Just because it's "such a good deal" doesn't mean you actually "need" it.
Find some limit, whether # of visits a month or amount of money you can spend or "I'm only looking for x or y types of items." Unchecked shopping, even from thrift stores…that way lies madness. Don't let your life's joy come from that. Find some other way to make yourself happy. |

You should start watching "hoarders".

LOL!! I'm not OP but that show keeps me in check! I am trying to get rid of things - not get more. |
| Thrift stores are fun and there are some great finds. However, most of us have way too much stuff as it is. My rule is to donate 20 things for every 1 thing I buy. |
