chimichanga

My DS loves chimichangas. Unfortunately, this creation of ChiChi's in the 80's seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur; there is no restaurant in my area of MD that serves it. While this may be the best for my DS's health and wasteline, it seems sad that he can't have this "treat" once in a while. Does anybody know of a place that still makes this?

That God-awful Mexican restaurant on Capitol Hill that's steps from Rayburn.

OP, please do not malign the chimichanga by associating it with Chi-Chis. It may not have originated in Oaxaca or Mexico City but the chimichanga certainly predates that crappy restaurant and has an important place in the cuisine of the Sonoran a Desert region.

The best part of the Chi Chis one was that it was deep fried. It's hard to find that kind anymore.

A chimichanga by definition is deep-fried. If it isn't deep fried, it is a burrito. I know I have seen a chimichanga on a tex mex menu in the DC area, but I can't remember where. Maybe check Guapo's menu.

Most tex-mex restaurants have them. I get them at El Tio- my guilty pleasure .

My parents order chimichangas, "not fried, soft." I have tried to explain that they just need to order a burrito.

Chevy's makes them. My 10yo loves them. We're in VA - not sure if they have a MD location.

Guapos in Bethesda has them. And La Palapa in Columbia-ish area.

I think you can get them at Alero's. I'm certain they have them at Plaza Azteca. And Guapo's.

Find a recipe together and start making them. DS can help and eventually learn to make them on his own. It can be his signature dish.
