Same, kid loved it. It was like summer camp for smart kids with some light academics thrown in.

My son is a junior with 3 AP’s and has. 3.8 weighted but probably not in 10% of class and hasn’t been labeled as gifted. He’s a smart motivated kid who has navigated dyslexia and severe ADHD wonderfully but it sounds like he probably doesn’t stand out? I don’t want to encourage him to apply if it’s nonstarter as a junior

I would speak with the contact at your school about it. What’s competitive in one part of Virginia may not be enough in another, and schools/districts are limited on how many students they can move forward in the process

It's very competitive up here in our NOVA public. The school division has to nominate your kid first.

Does anyone really know why it takes so long to get a decision? DC just submitted and we realized the wait for this decision will be longer than the wait for any college decision when they apply. And who is making these determinations, someone in the Virginia Dept of Education or the teachers and professors who run each program?

If it matters this is for a World Academy not one of the super competitive STEM or Math programs.

My DC did one of the language academies and it was amazing. Not sure why the reviews take so long, but it’s managed by VDOE. The director job postings explain that they don’t start until spring, so are managing staff not choosing students. https://vagovernorsschool.com/vgwla-director-application/

The final round of decisions is made by the state. I think it's by VDOE. It is really annoying how late they tell you because you certainly can't count on admission but if they don't get in you want to make other plans.

Any idea where to find data on how many students are in the final applicant pool for humanities?

Anyone know if going for music looks good if you are not going to be a music major (but it is one of your main extracurricular activities)?

I think so, yes. It shows passion and drive towards something they love. That is a soft skill colleges love.

Agreed it helps. Not the only the thing that got DS in but he’s now at a HYPSM.

Has anyone heard if their DC made it beyond the regional committee?

Good to hear- was just coming here to say every high stats kid we know who did it was denied to ivies/ivy+ schools and they almost all go to UVA.

I think UVA is a great school, but not what these particular kids wanted. I was also surprised bc I thought this would help push results a little more.
