Hello,
Ladies, would a newborn get any vaccination while we are in the hospital? I am so afraid of vaccination to be given before I talk to a ped, but maybe there are vaccines that are to be given before I am discharged? How bad are they? |
I think the only one was Hep B and we were asked to consent before it was administered. |
Not a vaccination per se, but it is also standard for babies to get a Vitamin K shot and erythromycin in the eyes pretty soon after birth. |
at georgetown, DS got a Hep B shot, but I had to sign off on it beforehand. |
Same at Shady Grove. |
I think it is standard to give Hep B. I did with my second, but my first I waited until she was older, how much infected blood is a little one going to be around? They have both recieved all the vaccincations recommend, but not on the schedule recommended. I only let my DC have 2 vaccines per visit, even if I had to go every month, also I had the MMR split for both. Good luck and congrats |
Same at Fairfax Inova |
My DD received the Hep. B at Sibley when she was born in June. I had to give consent and it was my choice to let the nurses give it to her in the hospital or wait untill we went for the first visit with the peditrician. |
OP here
My friend's baby got bad reaction to the vacination, prbably it was because baby wasgiven 3 shots at once. I am justwondering if thta Hep B may affect such a small baby. And if I can at least postpone it till the next ped visit (which is anyway will be within one week from birth) |
I'm going to wait on the Hep B shot. The risk is low and I'll make sure the baby gets it at an appropriate pediatric visit. |
I don't think there's any reason to get three shots at once - I don't know what they would all be. I am sure you could wait and get it at your peds. if you are concerned. I remember my pediatrician asking me when I brought my son in for his "2 day old visit" if he had gotten it in the hospital. |
An inside viewpoint..
Baby's are routinely given Hepatitis B vaccinations during their stay at the hospital. Keep in mind that if your pediatrician has privelages at the hospital it is your pediatrician who ordered it. If your ped does not have privelages, than the house neonatologist/pediatrician does. All hospitals require consent prior to giving the Hep B vaccine so you have the option to decline. Instead of wondering, I would recommend contacting your pediatrician prior to delivery and inquire about their preference. Most don't mind the shot being given at the hospital and others ask that you wait because they give pediarix (combined vaccines) or establish different schedules. Hospitals have no preference. |
We are planning to delay Heb B. I don't have it and the risk of exposure to Heb B for a newborn is very low. We'll wait until DD is a few months old. |
I am waiting until baby is two years old to administer Hep B, as this disease is not airborne, but only bloodborne, and I am Hep B negative... It is confounding to me that this vaccine is administered at BIRTH -- it is a vaccine for an STD -- don't think my baby is sharing needles, etc., either... |
Your ped should be matched up to your hospital and let you know what to expect. I believe most everything at the hospital is standard. If you want to know and maybe object- then talk to your child' pediatrician before they are born. YOU are your child's advocate. I don't understand this post since why don't you call your pediatrician? HAVE YOU DONE THIS? As your kid's advocate- be assertive and ask your child's doctor. I would say something different if you had said it was wondering about a recommendation- but just what the standard is??? LEARN AS MUCH as you can and be your child's advocate- but this question is silly- ask you pediatrician. |
