Will FCPS start before Labor Day in 2015?

Anonymous
DH is a physician and makes his entire 2015 call schedule now. Labor Day falls on Sept 7.

Is it safe to assume that school will start Sept 8 and not Aug 31?

Prince William and Loundoun Counties are starting on August 31st, so do not assume anything for FCPS!

I have taught in FCPS for almost 15 years and we have never started before Labor Day so I would think Sept. 8 is a fairly safe bet. That said, I feel like Karen Garza has gotten more done in the year she has been here than any other superintendant we have ever had, so I wouldn't put it past her to change things up.

The post Labor Day start was mandated by state law. It is known as the Kings Dominion law. It had nothing to do with any superintendent. Was that law changed by the General Assembly?

Yes, but other counties have gotten waivers for it, so it is not a done deal for any school system.

I hope they start after Labor Day. I think starting school in August, even the 31st, is just wrong.

Did you check the FCPS website? I thought these schedules were written years in advance.

From what I read, school systems may get a waiver if they had more that 10 days of weather-related closure in previous years. Last winter closures were beyond the 10 days, so FCPS can apply and qualify for school before Labor Day if it chooses to do so.

Disagree. I think going after Memorial Day is just wrong. Kids and teachers are done.

Problem is they probably won't end up shortening the year on the back end. The push is to add two weeks of school.

Personally I prefer starting after Labor Day. Those last weeks of August are a nice time to vacation as a family.

No need to assume anything, Mrs doctor's wife. Just search for "FCPS calendar 2015 -16" and you'll be amazed by the results.

Huh? OP wants to know what date school will begin for the 2015-16 school year. That has not been published. Typically the calendar is posted in January. The only discussion around the 2015-16 calendar is related to the new start times for high schools and middle schools.

PP--If you have a link to the new calendar, please post it.

Not really-nothing has been posted yet! There is one an FCPS but for Fayetteville, not Fairfax.

So, you'd have the go til the fourth of July?

Why are last weeks of August better to vacation than the first week of August?

No. What I mean is they'll start two weeks earlier and end when they end now in late June. That seems to be the goal of some.
