Hot Chocolate kit?

Anonymous
I am getting my husband (who has everything) a thermos and hot chocolate kit for christmas. It will be the gift that keeps on giving as we do a look of outdoors activities with the kids all winter so we will not have hot chocolate easily available.

Does anyone have a favorite hot chocolate mix?

I don't understand your hot chocolate mix question. I just use Hershey's chocolate syrup and hot milk.

All flavor great but I like raspberry the best

I use equal parts cocoa and sugar for hot chocolate.

If you want a mix, I enjoy the Godiva hot chocolate that comes in the tins. It's pretty good.

Totally unrelated question for those who don't use a mix but do use cocoa powder - do you have issues with little blobs of cocoa that you have to break up? I always seem to end up with little pellets of cocoa even if I warm up the milk before adding the cocoa.

I've been trying various methods to deal with this. So far, my preferred method is adding the cocoa and sugar first, mixing those together and then adding the milk. Using a whisk rather than a spoon also seems to help.

I make Alton Brown's recipe for hot chocolate mix, and put it in a reusable jar. It makes a ton--lasts us all winter--and it's delicious.

I follow the instructions that are on the can of cocoa. It makes like a chocolate paste/syrup first and then you add the milk. I've never had a problem with lumps.

Land O' Lakes Hot chocolate is good. Different flavors, thick and creamy. Not like Swiss Miss. Check Costco.

Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen has a couple good recipes. They call for mixing the ingredients in a food processor and I found that the fine texture helps the mix dissolve easily in hot milk.

Yes, if you use cocoa, you need to make a paste first and then dilute with the rest of the milk. Doesn't matter if the milk is hot or cold.

Penzey's has a good hot cocoa mix- nice cinnamon flavor if that's your kind of thing. It's more like Mexican hot chocolate

Penzey's is great.
I also like the Silly Cow Farms hot chocolate mixes: there are about 3 flavors, I think.
