Macy's - better sales now or after Christmas?

I just received a birthday gift from my mother that is totally not my style. She gave me a gift receipt and said she won't be offended if I exchange it. I'd love to obviously get the most bang for my buck, when would the best time be to exchange? I'm not normally a department store shopper so don't know the rhythm.

They just had a huge sale that ended a week ago. Their stock was really depleted. I might hold onto it for another month or so and exchange it for something from the new spring stock.
