We don't typically exchange presents with my folks but mil and fil send us gifts. Usually a purse for me and gift card for DH. I have no idea what to get them. They are homebodies who have everything. DH is no help.
what are some nice "experience" gift ideas? |
Gift certificate for a good restaurant where they live, tickets to a show, if you have kids - framed pic of them or calendar with pics if the family, wine of the month. |
Got mine an expensive set of hand team |
Ask your spouse what to get. They are his parents |
I don't have an answer for the "experience" category, but fyi earrings are usually a good bet for a MIL. Or a scarf. Can't remember who does this (Jackson & Perkins or one of those) but the china tea pot with a flowering plant in it is nice.
Depending on their age (if they are older) some DVDs of say, Johnny Carson or I Love Lucy or Carol Burnett--or Bob Hope. If younger, whatever was big when they were young (Gilligan's Island, Star Trek the original series (TOS), Mary Tyler Moore Show) FIL…Omaha Steaks… HTH! Actually it helped ME, ha ha so thank you, OP |
Gift baskets from Zingermans. |
Thanks people! I think I'm going to do a hybrid of some of the above. Sending a Mrs. Fields cookie tin that is customized with a pic of the grandkids lol.

I got MIL fancy tea this year. It's simething she would never get herself but I know she'll love it. Getting FIL some Arthur George socks because we found out he secretly watches the Kardashians. |
My husband shops for his parents, but he usually does a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant. It's moderately expensive, so it's a treat for them. |
Harry & David fruit of the month club. |
Ditto. It's not your responsibility. |
I ask my in-laws, as well as my parents, if we could eliminate exchanging gifts. One less thing to worry about and make the holiday less stressful. They were thrilled. |
I would love it if we didn't have to exchange with the ILs. I delegate the gift giving to my husband but then I feel like what he gets them doesn't look like it's from all of us. So then I feel like a heel when they give me more than we give them but I don't like their taste anyway. |
He's travelling until 16 dec. It's not a big deal for me and he appreciates it. |
If I let my husband buy presents, he would spend us into the poor house. I make the budget and buy the gifts so he doesn't buy his mother a solid gold toilet or disposable cashmere cat pan liners. |
