built in book shelves or free standing?

We are re-doing our master bedroom. Townhouse, built in 1980's. I'm considering taking one wall, which currently has one bookshelf, and lining it with built in bookshelves. We don't expect to move for another 10 years. I need the storage and like the look of built in, but worry that it will seem odd or something I'll want to pull out later. Thoughts?

I prefer built ins, so not sure why you've have to pull them out. I'd consider doing drawers on the bottom and shelves on the top, but it depends on how many books you have.

I generally like built in bookshelves, but I don't know that I'd want a whole wall of bookshelves in my bedroom. Other places in the house? Yes. Just not in my bedroom.

I don't think you'd ever regret it. Built ins add tons of storage and make the style of the room look cleaner than free-standing (as long as you don't crap up the built ins with too much stuff on the open shelves). You lose some flexibility on how to arrange the room, but if you've lived in that room for awhile and know how you like the furniture arranged that seems pretty low-risk.

In bedrooms, if you don't need to put something against a wall, the shelves the go underneath a window are ideal. Just shelves starting at the height of the window and below. Paint them inside for a nice contrast.

I'm not sure I'd do this in a bedroom, though I do really love books. Bedrooms usually need plenty of space for a bed, nightstands and two dressers. Are you taking away wall space that would be used for any of those things, or is there adequate space for everything? That would be my concern with bedroom built-ins. (in living spaces, you can often position couches or chairs in front of built-ins so the space isn't as lost.

Love, love, love built-ins. I'm a reader and have stacks of books in my bedroom. I would love some built ins around the window.

Gor for it.
