What colleges to aim for?

Anonymous
Quirky-ish boy (kind of a conventional quirky type) from an area private. 3.3 GPA, but he doesn't have a single C or D on his transcript thus far (junior). He took the SAT this fall and got 2100 without prep, so we are thinking he might be able to raise it a bit. Good ECs - varsity sport, forensics, service club, and does volunteering with underprivileged kids on a regular basis. Looking to major in economics or maybe finance.

The only criteria he has said is important to him is that it's in a mid-size city or above (say, Richmond size). Nothing rural.

Any thoughts?

Is going South ok with him, then?

Probably. Nothing too Southern (ie Washington & Lee) though.

Full pay?

Any APs?

Full pay. Five APs as of now, will probably do two next year.

The distance between his scores and his GPA are going to make it difficult to peg matches for him, so I'd cast a pretty wide net and make sure you have some *true* safeties on the list that he really likes. Some ideas to consider (some of these might be reaches):

Case Western
Clark
Dickinson
Eckerd
Goucher
Kalamazoo
Lafayette
Lawrence
Lewis & Clark
Muhlenburg
New College
Northeastern
Pitt
Rhodes
Union
University of Denver

I think his GPA is problematic. Any reason for low GPA?

Problematic in what sense? He's a solid B student in AP classes.

OP, what has he scored on AP exams?

Sarah Lawrence, Muhlenburg, Reed, Earlham, -- There are a large range of schools he could get into but I pick these out as schools for quirky types.
