Which are the "good" clementines? I would love to buy some plump, juicy ones instead of the dry hard ones. I was recently at Giant and bought a box from Florida. There were also some there from Morocco.
Is there a particular brand that is trustworthy? I feel like I am throwing my money away buying these hard little clementines that no one will eat. |
There's your problem. Don't buy them from Giant. Wegmans is usually much better. |
| I don't think it matters where you buy them, they are just hit or miss. I've gotten 3 boxes in the last month, one was amazing, one was fine and one was practically inedible. They were all Roxy from Morocco. |
I bought the ones from Morocco and they are delicous. I also get the cuties for my kids. Mostly, I get clementines from Costco, giant or whole foods. All the same. |
| TWe got good ones at Trader Joe's this week. But I agree that it's hit or miss--the same brand at the same store can vary from week to week. |
| Agreed that it just depends. I feel the clementines in the bag to make sure they are firm. I have found that the soft ones are not good. |
| Well I hate to be a fruit squeezer, but gently feeling the clementines is a good way to know which are good and which are bad. Skin should be a little loose and fruit should give a little on palpation. Look through the bag or box as best you can - don't buy boxes where you can see mold or other oddities! |
Fruit should not be too hard (dried out) or too soft (rotten), but fruit does need to give a little when gently pushed or they are not juicy and sweet. |
| Florida has a citrus problem right now due to a blight. We got a crate of tangelos from Fla and they were horrid. |
| Actually, I find that the clementines that are a little bit soft to be the best. |
| We usually like the clementines more later in the season--we're often disappointed in early December. And we generally have good luck with those from Morocco. |
| I just bought a huge box of them from bus. All dried out. I was trying to suffer through them then discovered mold in the second layer. Yuck. |
Bus = BJs |
| I've had two good batches of clementines this season, and plenty of bad batches. Purchased at Safeway and Costco. Very frustrating!! |
| I have had good luck with darling clementines |
