Is Ole Miss a good school?

DS wants to go to Ole Miss and both me and the wife have reservations about it. Is Ole Miss even academically on par with schools in the South? I've heard MS has the worst education system in the country.

Where did you and your wife go?

The short answer is NO.

No. Don't do it.

It looks quite lovely to me. I would just set expectations for DS in terms of academic performance.

NO!

It's only bad by DC standards - it's an okay school overall.

If he's interested in the atmosphere point him to Alabama and South Carolina - they are similar to Ole Miss but are much better schools.

OP again...I went to Indiana University and my wife went to VA Tech. Our knowledge of Ole Miss is limited to college football, but DS has been looking at some SEC schools so he probably knows more about it academically than we do. I've been trying to get him to consider Indiana, but he won't do it. Maybe he wants a place with warm weather and rabid football fans?

I am from the South and when I was growing up, for kids who wanted the big old traditional "University Experience," Ole Miss was the big State University of last resort - after UGA, Clemson, Bama, Auburn, certainly UNC, also FL and FL State. Really only large university that had lower standards was Georgia State and it was the dregs. The one friend I had who went there worked hard, got good grades freshman year and transferred to Georgia before you could say Uga.

I know a few families whose daughters went down there for college from Washington privates and I was pretty surprised. It's probably better now but it would have to be...

I would look at Alabama or Auburn first if he wants the tradition SEC experience. They're much better schools.

OP - what's your son's stats? Vandy's extremely hard to get in.

Auburn is pretty good. Alabama has race issues, still.

OP, if you kid wants to go to school in the South send them to Tulane or Georgia Tech.

Right because ACC schools such as UNC and now UVA are so much more enlightened than "those" schools from the SEC. PENN STATE is not even an academic institution. It's a cult of a school.
