Not really a fashion topic, but I've been thinking of trying flannel sheets out this winter. I remember them feeling nice and soft when I was a kid, but I'm a little hesitant because I also remember my pajamas acting like velcro against them, and waking up roasting by morning. Both could be non-issues since now I always sleep naked, though.
Just curious, do many of you switch to flannel sheets in the winter, and if so, do you have any purchasing tips? Also, what do you wear with them? For those who sleep naked, do you find that it eliminates the "velcro factor"? |
Growing up in the northern Illinois, my family broke out the flannel sheets in November and didn't go back to regular sheets until Spring. I am writing from the cozy comfort of them now! I never really sweat and no pj Velcro issue either. (My husband and I do keep the bedroom temperature cool (67 degrees) in the winter.) I do not sleep in the buff usually; I recently fell in love with the "Cool Nights" pajamas by Soma Intimates. These pj's keep me comfortable year round and the material don't "stick" to flannel sheets.
I used to love our Lands' End flannel sheets. Soft, warm, and they last forever. But flannel pajamas do stick to them and ride up. Ditching the pajamas fixes the problem.
Flannel all the way! In the buff here too - complete freedom of movement, and the feeling of every part of your body sliding against the softness of the material is sheer bliss. It'll be nothing like you remember from when you wore pajamas. Probably would keep regular sheets on all year if I wore anything, though, for the reasons you mentioned.
Love flannel sheets, but my husband overheats so I don't get to use them anymore.
Flannel, with hot water bottle warming up the foot of the bed as well.
We do flannel sheets here for the whole family, and the thermostat is usually at about 68. I wear an oversize t-shirt (my shoulders would get cold otherwise), hubby sleeps nude. The kids have had flannel in the winter time since they were very small. Our 10yo daughter wears a nightgown, our 12yo son sleeps in his underwear, and as far as I can tell, our 15yo son started sleeping in the nude sometime last year. None of them have ever complained about being too hot or getting tangled, regardless of what they are or aren't wearing.
Love flannel sheets, just don't wear flannel sheets + flannel pajamas
I have Threshold from Target and some from Garnet Hill, both are great. I love Garnet Hill. |
Pinzon Signature at Amazon are also good. Agree with others here that less is more when it comes to what you wear on your body if you're sleeping in flannel sheets.
OP here. Thanks for the advice everyone. I have a set on order to try out.
Woolrich from Target are really nice. We've had them for years and still love them. I hate the cold but always look forward to breaking them out each fall.
I was meh about the whole idea of flannel sheets until dh put some on our bed one cold winter day and ahhhhh - hooked. Love them during the winter.
Re: flannel, I like a top sheet only, otherwise I'm too warm, and never a flannel pillowcase. I just don't like the fuzzy texture against my face. Top sheet for our queen bed I buy a king flat - and for the blankets too. That way no one steals the covers. Plenty of material on either side.

I bought two flannel sets for my husband's bed last year from Bed Bath and Beyond because he likes to be warm in the winter. He loves them. He sleeps naked. The toasty warming of those sheets against your body on a cold night is just heaven. I can't sleep on them because I get hot and my legs will hurt.
When the weather started to get warmer I switched over to jersey sheets. We both love them. In the summer we go cotton. |
I also have fleece sheets, warmer than flannel without the velcro effect
