Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| With #1, my water broke before contractions started (at 41 weeks), and I wound up needing to be induced because I was positive for Group B strep. I'm now pregnant with #2 and am curious to know if I'm more likely to have my water break first this time as well, or if there's no correlation between pregnancies. Thanks for any insight or anecdotes! |
| Can't say in general, but my water broke before contractions with both pregnancies, followed by a quick labor in the first case and induction in the second. Good luck! |
| My water broke and I was induced with my first. I added vitamin C to my diet in the last four weeks of my second pregnancy and my water broke when I was pushing, about 15 minutes before she was born. |
| To the PP who added Vitamin C - how much? And how did you get that idea? Thanks for the responses! |

My water broke before contractions both times, and I needed pitocin both times. First time, water broke at 36.5 weeks in a gush; second time, water broke at almost 39 weeks with a trickle. No spontaneous contractions either time. FWIW, my second delivery was super-easy -- pitocin, epidural, baby 2.5 hours later (only 10 minutes of pushing).
My OB said pre-term rupture (which I technically had the first time, by only a few days) in one pregnancy increased risk of pre-term rupture in subsequent pregnancies. But this doesn't apply to spontaneous rupture after term. My own personal theory is that smaller women are more likely to rupture because you run out of room faster, but that's not backed up by science. |
So funny, almost exactly the same for me. No contractions, gush at 36 weeks, trickle at 38.5 weeks--except both labors went on for hours and second was emergency c-section. |
| ps we had sex right before 1st preterm rupture. they say that can bring it on... |

I was 2 for 2 also.
#1 PROM (premature rupture) at 34 wks, 6 days. I was induced when contractions did not start on their own. #2 38.5 weeks. Water broke as first sign of labor (at least I knew what it was this time!) Contractions weren't bad; I was at 5 cm when I got to the hospital. Ended up with a c-section (unplanned) because the baby was breech. I did have early contractions (about 8 weeks early) but they stopped with two shots of "turb," I think it's called, and my water didn't break then. The funny thing about #1 is that I also was a 5-week early preemie because my mom's water broke. Our geneticist thought perhaps there was a link, but both baby and mother would have to have the trait. There is nothing definitive to back this up. |
I was eating one vitamin C chew from Trader Joe's 2-3 times per day. It was suggested by a doula friend when I said that my water had broken prior to labor with my first. I checked with the doc and she agreed. |
| My water broke at 41.5 weeks for first child. For the second, labor started on her due date. I asked my OB exactly what you are asking and he said that there is no correlation between first and subsequent pregnancies on liklihood of water breaking. Totally independent. Good luck! |
