No ultrasounds during my last trimester

Anonymous
I am currently 28 weeks and my doctor told me that she will not be doing anymore ultrasounds. I'm concerned about this, how do we know if everythiong is ok? Is it normal not to do anymore ultrasounds?
I have done 3 so far, one at 8 weeks, another at 13 and then another at 20.

Yes it is normal. You've already had more than many people and if everything looks ok there wouldn't be a need to do more.

If you aren't satisfied with three ultrasounds have the doctor do an amniosentisis. Much more thorough.

Two u/s is pretty standard - unless there are medical/high risk reasons to warrant more. In fact, I'm surprised you had one at 8 and then again at 13 weeks.

Doc. know everything is ok based on your medical history (incidents of m/c), your weight gain, BP, blood test, urine test, and by measuring your belly/listening to the fetal heart beat. Obviously, if one of these #s is amiss, the doctor will follow up with questions, tests, more visits. etc. These "type" of things tell a lot to a doctor - plus, the doc. follows up with questions - any discharge, blood, do you feel the baby move, etc.

As for the last trimester, if there is no reason to suspect anything wrong than a u/s is not usually done. A pelvic exam around the 36-38 week mark is usually sufficient enough (to anticipate labor, feel the position of the baby, check mucous plug, etc.)

Same as the PP's. I had one at 7w (to confirm pregnancy), at 8w (to get a EDD since my LMP and size were so far off), 12 w (Nuchal), and again at 20 ws (Level 2 ultrasound). At my last appointment, they said "this is the last time we'll see you, unless your doctor says otherwise." So, you probably don't want an u/s for the remainder of the pregnancy as that means something might be cause for alarm.

As another view: I ended up asking for a 36-week ultrasound, and was given an order for it no problem, without any questions asked. It was for my peace of mind and also to monitor the growth of a fibroid, but they are routine enough that you can just ask for one. (The fibroid isn't a serious issue, so I don't think that mattered in the OB's decision to OK the ultrasound.)

You had a fibroid. That is a reason for an ultrasound. Most insurance plans WILL NOT PAY for a 3rd trimester u/s unless there is an actual medical reason to have one.

I had once ultrasound in each pregnancy at around 12 weeks.

Two ultrasounds here. One at 8 weeks and the other at 20.

I was expecting just 2 u/s, but at my 20-week the technician said that they'd definitely do another one in the third trimester, too, as a matter of routine. I was/am skeptical, and am switching practices anyway, so I guess I'll never find out!

First pregnancy, I got two u/s - one at 10 weeks and one at 20 (level 2). This pregnancy, I also had a nuchal fold translucency, so one additional. I may have to get one at 37 weeks to estimate the baby's size, only because I had fourth degree tearing last time and they may want to do a C-section if baby is big.

It is typical to only get 2 u/s and that is what most insurance pays for.

A third trimester u/s may be indicated if there's an abnormality on the previous ultrasound such as low lying placenta or previa or enlarged fetal kidneys, etc.

Agree that they're definitely not routine - drs. need a reason to charge one to your insurance. That said, my docs said early on that they'd 'probably find a reason' to do one at 36 or 37 weeks. I'm over 35, so I think they have some leeway (good ol' 'advanced maternal age'). They may also write it up as concerned about baby being too small, or having a big head, or needing to verify position, but the point is that it is considered non-routine.

2 is common - 1 to confirm pregnancy at around 8 weeks and a 2nd at 20 weeks to do a more detailed look and make sure there are no major issues with organs or development where they may need to to surgery.

The 13 week for the Nuchal is optional based on if you have decided to have this test done

Obviously, if there is a medical reason a doctor will give you another.

In addition, some practices do them a whole lot more frequently. My SIL had one done at every appt. She was not high risk (with the exception of being obese)

I've been pregnant twice and did not have any ultrasounds after the 20 week mark.
