Beach rec

Our family would like to take a summer vacation to one of the local beaches this year. Which one would you recommend? The last few years we have been going to NC but the drive can be a bit long with 14 month old twins. TIA

We had been going to Rehoboth Beach that bast few years and found it to be some what enjoyable. We would stay at the Henlopen Condos at the end of the boardwalk. The beach there is very nice and a little less crowded than in the center of town. Funland is nice especially for the younger kids and there are unlimited places to eat.

The last two years we have instead headed for Hilton Head, SC. Despite the long drive, we feel it is a better value. A condo (2BR/2BA) right on the beach with a pool for $1,200 for the week. The beach is nicer, the water is warmer, better golfing options and more activities for the kids. Also, the beaches are not nearly as crowded.

We really like Lewes. It's quiet and sleepy, not as crowded and touristy as Rehobeth.

8:30 poster - where did you stay for $1200 in hilton head?

Not the PP but Sea Pines is having a 15% off special if you book before 3/31. We have gone to HH for the past 4 years and love it. With the special and prices going down a bit in general we spent a lot less this year. We always get a SFH so I don't know about condo prices.

Check out the Folly Field area - loys of condos available. We usually go the week before school starts, which is late this year (8/31). A lot of other schools are back in session by then so prices are lower and negotiable.

We use vrbo.com to find a place we like and then negotiate with the people.

We love HH too and also use vrbo.com. We prefer the Palmetto Dunes plantation.

Getting back to OP's question, I'd say most of the beaches are family-friendly except Dewey - too much of a party atmosphere. And although I loved Ocean City as a teen, I now think it's ticky tacky and it isn't my first choice. What type of atmosphere do you like? Growing up, we often rented a house in Chincoteague (and we've been twice for a long-weekend with DD who's now 2). Although places are not on the ocean and you actually have to drive or ride bikes to it, there are many places for rent on the canals. Chincoteague is ideal if you like less "action". The wild ponies are there, the beach is there, bike baths galore if you're in to biking (we have a trailor for DD and she loves going for bike rides), and just an overall laid back experience.

Try Sandbridge, VA - same feel as the outer banks, but is located about 10 mins south of VA Beach. Can go into VA Beach for "nightlife" if you want and have the VA Aquarium in case you get a rainy day.
