Cost of Retin A

Anonymous
I just tried to fill my first Rx for Retin A at Costco. For the generic, it would have been close to $300!! Is there a cheaper place to buy it?

The stuff is expensive. But it's probably a big jar or tube for $300. It should last a long time.

Oh, forgot to add, try an online pharmacy.

And if it's for medical rather than cosmetic reasons, have your doc write a script so the insurance company will help pay for it.

Wow, really!? For how many days' supply? 30 days, 3 months, 6 months...?

If it's for acne and you're under a certain age, it should be covered. If it's for wrinkles/cosmetic reasons, you're SOL. I found this out the hard way when I aged out of coverage for Differin (even though it was still for acne).

$2 a tube. My Indian friends get it for me from India.

your dermatologist will probably sell you something that includes retin a in it, more expensive than if covered by insurance, but way less that $300.
Also, if you find someone who has Obagi products for sale in their office, some of their products have retin a, etc in it.

You don't have a prescription? My derm had to show that it was for adult acne, but my insurance covers it, $7 a tube!

OP says that she has an RX.

Every time I get mine filled at any pharmacy, they have to call the insurance company and the doctor. Mine is covered b/c it is actually for acne but they still have to make it difficult every time I get it refilled. Luckily, one tube lasts forever. If they are charging you full price and your doctor prescribed it for acne, have the doctor call the pharmacy and go from there. If the doctor prescribed it for wrinkles, you are going to have to pay full price. Wrinkles are cosmetic.

My dermatologist has prescribed retin a and differin to me for acne but my insurance does not seem to cover either. Full price.

Yes, I'm dying to know which insurance plans still cover this $126 (generic) tube of zit cream. Mine does not and I'll name it: BCBS carefirst / Caremark cvs

8:06- one net Ppo no coverage. When I lived in ny I had bcbs and it was covered. Going from 30$ to 300$ was awful.... And I didn't. I could not justify that.

Call your doctor and have them call the insurance.

I have BCBS and picked it up at CVS. Cost $5. They did call my doc to confirm it was for cystic acne.
