is marketing a great fit for a quirky girl

DD wants to major in business. she's says either management or marketing sonce she's not a fan of numbers. Most people on here agree that marketing majors are atractive, possibly sorority types. I think my daughter is attractive, but she is definitely an outside of the box thinker. She's also interested in physical therapy. But the science and math aspect of the career is a turnoff

I would rethink. It's not that you have to look a certain way, it's just a very limiting major, in my opinion (I work in marketing). And the more quantitative you can be, the more job options you'll have in marketing.

Marketing is becoming more quantitative by the day.

You can minimize the math/numbers but then you minimize your competitiveness for jobs.

Been in marketing for 25 years. Math is definitely involved. Analytics are key. This isn't like TV.

Numbers and statistics are EXTREMELY important for marketing. Also, being quirky isn't necessarily as good of a fit for marketing/advertising as people think it is. You need to be able to think of things that will appeal to the masses or to particular segments, and a lot of those segments are very buttoned-up business types.

Okay, what alternatives do you suggest? She is interested in Marketing because she took an Advertising elective. She's also the online editor for her school paper. I suggested Digital media. she feels it will pigeonhole her into a career.

Design fields...landscape architect, graphic arts, architect.....she could contact firms and spend a day shadowing someone and see if it's for her.

Sorry, but no. If marketing is out because it's not in demand, architecture and graphic design are DEFINITELY out.

Mrs. degree.

Read Tyler Cowen - Average is over. In 10-20 years, if you aren't superlative, you are fucked.

Perhaps an english degree, and become a teacher - do a stint with TFA or JET programme (go overseas).

or she can intern on the hill perhaps, work as a staffer, and parlay that into a gov. affairs job in industry.

Disagree with your opinion. Graphic artist, landscape architects are both growing fields architecture not so much. The design fields are a good match for an outside the box thinker who is quirky and has limited math skills.

People who are smart and not afraid to work will always do fine. She should do general studies and major in whatever classes she takes an interest in. All you need is a diploma.. You can go back and specialize later.

Physical therapy is a bit more math intensive then you think
