And the 2014 DCPS Principal of the Year is . . . Powell Elementary's own Janeece Docal!

I just came from Powell where in a brief ceremony with Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser and Chancellor Kaya Henderson, Principal Janeece Docal of Powell was recognized as DCPS' principal of the year. It was a great recognition of years of hard work, perseverance, and to those of us who have been part of or even just witnesses to Powell's growth and success, a tremendous affirmation for her work and the possibilities of DCPS.

Wooo hooo!

Great job! I know a number of Powell parents who love their school and Principal Docal. Wonderful news.

Awesome! Powell was the first DCPS school I visited when we moved to DC in 2012. It was right after the last day of school, I didn't know I was speaking to Principal Docal when I wandered into the building asking for the office, and she was in the middle of something but gave me a quick tour and answered my questions. When I found out she was the Principal later from the office staff, I was so impressed that she took the time to answer the questions of a wandering stranger who was totally uninformed about DCPS. That stayed with me, and I've been singing the praises of Powell ever since.

We didn't get in last year but did get into a charter, so we're there and happy, but I still love Powell and will cheerlead all good things that happen there for sure!

Kudos to Michelle Rhee selecting her for Powell back before most of the current Powell crop of parents on this board even had kids. Also to New Leaders for selecting her and Docal's perseverance and vision for the school. I can think of a few higher SES parents who enrolled in 2011, which likely let to these newer parents to enroll, leading to more socioeconomic diversity. Great story.
