Finally, Arlington to scrap streetcar projects

Anonymous
now we have to vote out Tejada and Hynes and put in a more fiscally responsible board to get the county off the frivilous spending bandwagon it's been over for the last several years.

Great news. Now they can spend that money on actual county priorities like expanding and updating schools. Hopefully once we get rid of Tejada and Hynes we can stop the $1 million bus stops and what not for good. Even more money for schools, affordable housing, etc without stealing resources from parks and community centers.

I personally can't wait to vote Fisette out, though. I'm sure his concession speech will include that his loss must be a "miscommunication" involving the ignorance of the Arlington electorate or something, though

Usually it's not possible to spend transportation money on schools. Is Arlington County an exception?

don't kid yourselves. this move is as much about their re-elections as anything else.

"i voted for it before i voted against it" and all that.

Well, they keep segregating chunks of incremental tax revenue along the proposed streetcar corridors to fund transportation--they can undo the TIFs and have the money go into general revenue to be shared with the schools. That would be a start.

This is so short sighted. Every single study of modern streetcars show that PERMANENT streetcar infrastrucutre significantly increases property values and desirability of businesses and new houses want to locate on permanent infrastrcuture not a bus line. Columbia Pike sucks. But I guess you all think its awesome and that there is a money tree growing somehwere to continue build subsidized housing etc...

I have never understood this. Columbia Pike has thousands of affordable housing units now. The County Board wanted to build a streetcar that will "significantly increase property values" and then use the money to "build subsidized housing." Why not just leave it alone, as the last affordable pocket in Arlington?

It took a chunk of the democratic-majority voting for republican-turned-"independent" Vistadt to kill off a wasteful boondoggle like the streetcar line.

Hopefully that same chunk of common-sense voters will toss Tejeda next election; he's a dangerous extremist who will run the county into financial ruin if left if place.

let's hope MD peope see the purple line the same way. a total waste of moeny
