How much did you spend on all new appliances of for new gourmet kitchen? My wife picked out

Anonymous
She picked out a $12,000 thermador fridge, a $10,000 blue star range , $3,000 hood and $1500 dishwasher. Is it crazy to spend this kind of money on appliances or is it par for the course for a gourmet kitchen? House is probably worth 1.2 million or so.

Thanks.

We live in a million+ home and that is about right. However, since you are doing a remodel, you should spend what you can afford.

We live in a neighborhood where a $1.2 million house is not that special, sadly. So yeah, that sounds totally crazy to me even though my house is technically worth more than yours. I love to cook and have never felt hampered by my mid-grade appliances. A well-designed kitchen in terms of space is much more important than fancy appliances IMO. But as PP said, if you can afford it, why not?

That is fairly typical for a 1.5M home. In the 1.2 range, it borders on excessive -- but not by much. It is definitely what buyers would like in that price range (not necessarily what they expect). I can tell you from personal experience that none of the appliances are WORTH the up charge. She has picked out quite a few appliances with poor reliability ratings.

From an investment standpoint, yes, that's way "over the market" for a 1.2 house, i.e., you won't get a $30k boost in value. But, if you're going to be there for a while and it will improve your experience AND you can afford it, it's not outrageous. One could double those costs if money were no object. I'm sure your wife will enjoy showing her kitchen off, which may be worth the $10-12k you're "overspending"

OP, does your spouse have a reason for picking those appliances? As the PP said, they're not a good value, and they don't seem like the choices of someone who actually does a lot of cooking, because she could be getting something a lot better for the same money. Is this about aesthetics?

7:34 here -- Actually, the dishwasher seems reasonable. Maybe the hood. But the range and the fridge, no.

Agree that the hood and dishwasher are fine. The refrigerator and range are ridiculous. Unless she is a gourmet cook, why would you spend $10,000 on a range. Is the Thermador a full freezer on one side and a full refrigerator on the other? I can't even find a Thermador in that price range in a quick search on the internet.

I live in a $1m house and that sounds insane to me. Several of my neighbors just redid their kitchens and nobody put in appliances like that. We just bought a new fridge (a Samsung) and only spend like $1200 and don't feel that it looks at all out of place in our home.

I spent along those lines when we remodeled our kitchen. For me, we have 2 little kids and 2 teenagers. The kitchen in the evenings is the central place. Once I start making dinner, I don't leave the kitchen until about 9 or 9:30. I wanted the kitchen to be the room I most enjoyed. I love that my kids hang out with each other helping with homework, coming and going, etc.

Just last night I commented to DH that thank goodness we out in 2 dishwashers. Our house is in a neighborhood that is just about to tip over the $1m mark but we're here for the long haul.

If your house is worth $1.2-$1.5, spending $30K is right about where you should be - maybe a tad on the high side, but say you are $5K over (which is about the max, I think), $5K is a rounding error on that home value and it is costing you, what? $20 a month?

enjoy your life.

Yes.
$1.2M house in this area doesn't mean much (well, relatively, of course, but nevertheless).
On the plus side, once in a while you'll be able to impress those few who worship SubZeros and the likes.

Wolf range -7k
Sub zero fridge - 6k

Don't know where you are, but in my neighborhood, that would all look silly in a $1.2 million house.

Agree with these recommendations. Although I think the range will be closer to $8k and the fridge will be a Little more than 6k. Shop around.
