Suze Orman

Do you think she gives sound financial advice? I was thinking of buying her most recent book about steps to take during this bad economy.

I love Suze but recently saw a news segment on why people should not listen to her. What she says makes sense but the segment brought up some very real issues. I'll see if I can find the link.

I read that but didn't agree with a lot of it. There are some counter articles on the internet now as well.

I love her tv show. I've never read her books.

Dave Ramsey gives great financial advice, as well as Bob Brinker.

I know my financial planner says she is a nut.

The issue I have with Suze Orman is she presents items as black or white and I believe that there is a lot of grey.

An example is she has historically told people not to get an interest only loans. Well - it depends on how you were going to use it.
I used it so that I did not need to refinance once I sold my previous property. I treat my mortgage as if it is a traditional loan as opposed to paying only the interest part. In my case, getting an interest only loan was the right thing to do as it saved me lots of money.

I think you can download her book for free off of Oprah's website, FYI.

She is definitely an oddball, but does your financial planner think that she gives bad advice?

I used to like her but recently I noticed her on the back of an Avon catalog suggesting now was the time to get into Avon. I don't think hawking a suggestion like this is a good one in the current economic client. Tons of Avon reps and you are not really your own business but a contractor and then you get into paying self-employment taxes, etc.

I just heard on npr that avon reps are doing really well in the downturn.

The Saturday Night Live skits mocking her clothes, her lifepartner and her way of speaking are hilarious.

nothing to do with the original topic.

To me, it seems like Suze just uses common sense to tell people the way it is. If you're trying to figure out if a Roth IRA is a good investment for you, she'll outline the pros/cons of it - but it doesn't take a rocket scientist (or Suze) to talk about the benefits of a Roth IRA.

It really depends on what type of financial advice you're looking for - self help, investing, savings, or what?

If you have a specific situation you may be better off talking with someone instead and that way you can bounce your specific questions off of that person.

Like I said, to me, it's just a lot of glorified common sense stated eloquently and passionately in layman's terms.
