Hi all,
We are in bounds for Janney, but I'm trying to figure out what our backup choices would be if we don't get in (no sibling prefernce). Any thoughts on Murch, Mann, Eaton, Key, Hearst in particular? We will try to go to open houses but I'm due any day with baby number 2, so I figured I'd just ask for general thoughts here. Thanks in advance! |
| You have zero chance of getting in OOB at Murch, Mann and Key. You may have a shot at Hearst. |
| Do you plan to leave the school after PK4? |
| Yes, Hearst is the only possibility, and even that is unlikely. |
How is this relevant to OP's question? |
| There close to 400 applications for Hearst, so not super likely there. Isn't Janney getting an addition for more classroom space, so maybe more PK4 classes will open? |
| If you are just going to leave Hearst after a year, please don't apply. Of course, you have every right to apply and then leave, but please don't. |
| OP, just keep your kid where they are for another year rather than making two moves. Your kid and your kid's class is the basis for the next 6 years of school, including friends and community events - to move for K would be very disruptive to your kid. (In the unlikely event you get a spot.) |
+10000000 There are many, many people around the city who would love to come to Hearst and commit to the school community through 5th grade. Please don't take a spot if you do not intend to stay. |
| OP, you realize you would be taking a spot from another child who would stay through 5th grade, right? |
| OP, perhaps you could consider Appletree Columbia Heights? It is only PK3 and PK4 so you could go there for one year and then switch to Janney. We considered it for PK3 but ultimately decided to keep our child where he is. I did not apply to other PK3 programs because as others have said, I did not want to take a spot from others who would ultimately stay at the school. |

We sent our son to at Columba's last year after not getting a Pk spot at janney. Obviously this option is not free.
My point is, if you want a spot somewhere, I would apply to some privates as well. |
|
Wouldn't Eaton be a(n unlikely) option also?
Charters. Paid preschool. A close-as-you-can-get EOTP school. |
| so glad my charter is a commute and thus safe from you. I would never dream of doing anything other private preschool in your position. |

OP here -- As background, we are just at the beginning of this process. We are in a private 3 yo preschool now but are hoping to get into Janney for PK 4 through the rest of elementary school. Just took a major pay cut this year, so obviously it would be ideal if we get into Janney. If not, since its an open lottery, it seemed reasonable to start researching other nearby schools to put down as numbers 2, 3, etc.
I do understand many NW schools are oversubscribed, but I have not yet looked into our chances of getting into other nearby schools as an oob family. |
