Flora Singer parents -- the Learning Center. Do you have any experience with it? Thanks.

We live in bounds for Flora Singer but my DD has gone to school elsewhere up through 2nd grade. Now she may go to FSES, to the Learning Center. Do your kids interact with kids from there? Any experiences? I would love for her to get to know the neighborhood kids, to interact, etc., but I'm not sure it's right for her. Any impressions, thoughts are welcome.

Yes, there is some interaction with other classes. Certain learning center students come to other classes for particular subjects or combine for specials. Also, for certain subjects, students go to the learning center (for example, I know that in 3rd grade, 5 students from each class were chosen to have social studies with a learning center class). If your child goes to the onsite after care, then she will meet other students there as well.

What is the Learning Center?

It's a special program within FSES for students with disabilities or learning issues.

I know someone who is in the program. Family is very happy with it.

I think Mr. Heatwole is very dedicated to making the Learning Center a strong program and I have the impression that it's important to him that the kids are integrated into the school. I have a child at FSES who is not in the Learning Center.

Thanks everyone.

There are some kids who are separated and then others who are in the mainstream classrooms. It's a very open and accepting community. The value of programs for kids with learning differences (across the spectrum) was stressed throughout the process when looking for the new leader before we moved from OTES to FSES. Heatwole is a great leader in this regard.

… oh, and when I say separated, I mean in self-contained classrooms. The whole community comes together all the time for meals, celebrations, etc.
