I want a fitness techie gadget. What should I buy

Anonymous
I have recently been very motivated with my fitness routine. I am jogging, doing yoga, using myfitness pal, and attending a weight lifting class. I want to buy something to both reward myself and keep me motivated. I am looking at a fitbit, but also possibly a Garmin or another of the new fitness watches. What do you have that you like?

Wireless headphones?

A new gym bag?

I love my Fitbit Flex and it integrates with MyFitnessPal, which is really helpful.

Garmin recently came out with a great device that combines the GPS watch with the fitness tracker. I think it has heartrate too, the Forerunner 15. It retails for $170 or so.

I've found that it's not the device, but the community of users that provides the best motivation. Having others who are similar positions (losing weight, trying to stay healthy) and who I can use as a benchmark or a competitor has been most helpful in my efforts.

So if all your friends have Fitbit, go with that. Or jawbone or garmin or nike or whatever. They all do more or less the same thing.

Fitbit is coming out with a heartrate monitor (including all the other fitbit features). I think sometime in January, if you can wait that long.

Jawbone up 3 is a fitness tracker that tracks your steps, sleep and heart rate, they just announced it. The app lets you track your food and activities as well. I have the Jawbone up 24 and really like it, would like the one with the heart rate monitor though.

If jogging or running are what's motivating you (rather than number of steps), any gps device will upload to Strava.com, which has a great community of athletes at all levels. I love entering the monthly how-much-can-you-run challenges, and the monthly 10k challenges. Getting in one 6.2 mile run a month is a great goal.

I also have a fitbit, and haven't really found it that engaging even with a community of friends on there. I don't wear the fitbit during runs, though, so it really doesn't reflect my overall fitness.

I have a garmin Vivofit and love it. It sets goals for you and gradually increases them, to nudge you to push yourself. That approach works for me. I also like that it has a display because that is what I pay the most attention to. I do look at stats but during the day I like being able to look at my wrist and see how I'm doing, and go for a walk if I'm not on track. It also doesn't need charging and is waterproof. The biggest drawback is aesthetics, and the app is so so. I'm not sure if there are any community features as I've never tried to use that.

I have the Fitbit force which is great because I can see progress on the fitbit -I don't need to look at my phone.
