s/o Washington Green Grocer cost comparison

Have any of you done a cost comparison with the farmers' market or Whole Foods type of store? I am highly tempted to order but wondering about cost.

I am a customer and I have not. I have been tempted, but I have found the quality to be high, the convenience can't be beat, and the service to be excellent. My gut tells me the price may be a little high, but it is worth it on the other counts.

We did about five years ago when we started getting WGG delivery. Depending on what's in the box that week, it's usually the same price or less expensive than it would be at Whole Foods (we get the organic large box). The small box is way less of a good deal.

I think most of the add on products (meat, dairy, etc) are more expensive, but we rarely, if ever, get those.

There are some things that are cheaper some that aren't, but overall it's served to lower our household food costs as we optimize based on what's coming in the box, instead of winging it each week.

I used to use them every week for about 10 years, but the cost shot up very quickly while the quality has never been that of a farmers market. I stopped about a year ago.

I haven't done a price comparison either but I think the local box I get each week ($33.75) is pretty good value. I only buy a few extra veggies each week (usually basics like onions, garlic, celery etc) I agree with the PP about maximising what you do with the box, when I use everything up it's hugely satisfying. It also is worth it to me in other ways, I cook much more varied meals, with veggies I wouldn't necessarily pick up in stores.

I wonder if anyone has compared WGG to Hometown Harvest.

I've used them for years but also shop at the Bethesda Farm Market on Sundays. I think they are very comparable in price. Farm fresh eggs are the same price and so is most produce. I prefer meat from the farm market but they are both equally expensive.

Zeke at WGG is wonderful to work with and service is great.

I never did a cost comparison but really liked the service and didn't think it was too crazy for what you got. We had trouble using everything each week sometimes but the convenience was great and the service was very good and it was fun and the kids liked getting the box every couple weeks. We've suspended it because of our too-busy to cook a lot Fall schedule but I will probably pick it up again in a week or two.
