Give me ideas for decor

I have four shelves on the end corner of my kitchen cabinets (upper cabinets, above counter). They are only 9 inches in height. What can I put on them that is decorative? Everything I come across has a very "country" look to it, and I am so not "country". Any creative ideas?

I try to keep practical things for decor. Something nice, but not tchochkes (sp?)

Vases?
I collect bowls, so I have stacks of them in my open cabinets.
My friend has all their glasses for alcohol there.
My sister keeps all her cookbooks there.

Thanks, everyone! These are all great ideas. Keep them coming! I love the plant idea because I love plants. The hard part is finding things just the right size because they are small shelves (9" high x 6" deep).
